BUDS Pre- School enjoyed the Gruffalo
At Buds Pre-school site, we have just completed a five week project linking to the story of “The Gruffalo”. It all started with a small group of our three year old boys who were talking about monsters. The staff discussed lots of childfriendly ways to develop the boys’ discussions.
The story was handled with such humour, fun, songs and movements that everyone enjoyed. The younger children enjoyed the group walk into the jungle and meeting other animals; the rat, snake and of course the gruffalo himself. One of the staff called Loreen Graham, made a long road paper path heading into the jungle, full of leaves, trees and the children re-enacted the whole story day after day until they all got to know it very well.
A large cave was also erected, using a large tapolene, twigs, leaves, a floor mat and cardboard cut-outs of animals, to represent the gruffalo’s home. At the end of the project, children were asked to dress up in their chosen outfits of non-good looking creatures. Some came with masks, interesting costumes, funny hats and painted faces. It made a wonderful parade of different characters that week and a real success to the topic. My fears were totally unfounded and I was very proud of the staff and the way the topic was handled. This was childcare at its best.
